2.02.2025 End of an era.

My buyer has left with his car well packed with large and heavy boxes. He tells me he intends to build an open baffle. I have mixed feelings about the IB components having gone. Glad to have the room they took up. Yet saddened by the realization that I shall not build another subwoofer. Lots of mixed memories of audio going back over many years. 

Thank you to those who have followed my journey. I hope it gave you some amusement. Perhaps you even learned something here. If it was only how not to go about these things. The journey is the thing. Greater musical enjoyment the intended goal. Good luck with your own projects, Chris.

19.01.2025 Has the IB found a new home?

 Another cold grey day. I have been dragging the IB components out of storage in the spare room. Eight 15" subwoofer drivers and the hefty power amplifier.They all seem at least twice as heavy as I remembered them. 

 I have it all stacked on the stage. An extension of the landing beyond the open stairwell. An excellent place for my years of experimenting with different audio systems. Without it being in the way.

 The SVS 16-46PCi subwoofer went to a good home yesterday. Now it is the turn of the IB subwoofer. In all its numerous parts. I have bolted four of the units together in two pairs. It is the safest way to carry them without a box. Their rubber gaskets meet. Protecting the cones from physical damage. Within the safety cage of their aluminium baskets. Doubly reinforced by their joining face to face. 

 The Behringer Europower EP2500 amplifier sits on the landing in front of them. Fitted with a silent fan years ago for domestic use. The original 24V fan was far too noisy.

 I have had an offer to buy at my requested price. Now just a matter of when he can pick everything up.

11.01.2025 IB subwoofer parts for collection only!

 I haven't been posting here for a couple of years. Luckily I managed to sell much of my Hifi equipment a couple of years ago. That just leaves the IB subwoofer drivers, power amp, cables, mixer and test equipment.

 I have eight AEIB15 15" drivers. One set of four has an Fs of 13Hz. The other four have an Fs of 32Hz. 

 These were all imported direct from the USA and used in a very successful, true infinite baffle setup. Which I built myself in my modest home. As can be discovered in the countless posts here. 

 I have become deaf, lost my dear wife and grown old [soon to be 78!] Now with a serious heart condition. So I no longer have any need for any of my equipment. I am happy to sell it ridiculously cheaply to any enthusiast who would like to experiment with infinite baffle subwoofers. 

 Eight Acoustic Elegance AE1B15 drivers: All 8 Ohm and 15" diameter. With large, heavy magnets.

 A Behringer EP2500 power amplifier. Claimed 2x1200W.

 A calibrated Behringer ECM8000 test microphone. Boxed and cased. Almost unused.

 A small Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer. Hardly used.

 A large box of mixed cables MUST also be taken away.

 The catch is you have to collect it all from my rural home near Assens in Denmark

I live in the SW on the central island of Fyn. There is absolutely no offer of posting any of the equipment involved. Collection only! 

 The 15" drivers are heavy! Four are boxed. The other four have lost their boxes. Condition well used and dusty but working well last time they were connected. No guarantees are offered on any of the equipment as these are all being given away almost free of charge. 

 I may place adverts online here in Denmark. So get in touch ASAP if you can house an IB and own a car for transport. Or just fetch it and sell it on?

Feb 22nd 2022 Equipment sales making steady progress.

 Friday 25th Feb. March 9th /10th. 15 years since I started this blog. Where did all those long years go?
 
 The Naim amps and Linn Kans have gone. The LP12 is pending collection. I had the Kans on top of the 753sFs as stands. We needed something more "forwards." To overcome our mutual deafness when watching Netflix in our old age. We can never hear the dialogue.

 Somebody made a very low bid for the Mission 753Freedom Center speaker. Which I refused. I may have to bring the price of the Mission 753Freedom floor-standers down to excite some interest. They were great in their day but this is long forgotten.

 I'd had the Kans for probably 40 years. The Linn Sondek about the same. Though it was upgraded 25 years ago. With Ittok VIII and a DL304MC cartridge. Plus a Valhalla PS, new sub-chassis, bearing and springs. The Naim amps were at least 26 years old. I am hopeless at remembering dates and calculating age.

 I bought the Naim amps from the same dealer who rebuilt the Linn. With the proceeds from selling the rural cottage. Which we had rebuilt ourselves. From a pile of stones in a corner of a field about 35 years ago. Complete with sheep on the token roof during the "viewing".  It was ten more years before moving over to Denmark. Then starting all over again with another, detached, rural hovel.

 March 9th. The Linn Sondek LP12 has now been collected. On the same day that a latecomer offered a higher price ha  I was asking! A very pleasant chap from Copenhagen was upgrading his own Linn. At least it is going to a good home. The Linn Kan speakers have gone.

 Now I have somebody coming to look at the Mission 753 Freedom speakers. There won't be much left soon. I had better start thinking about what to do with all my hundreds of LPs, CDs and DVDs!

 March 10th I dismantled the 4x15" IB drivers from the manifold/box. Then removed the near empty, multi-shelf, equipment rack and the IB box outside.  The manifold can be dumped at the recycling yard as scrap wood. 

 Another large box of cables has been filled. The EP2500 power amp will be stored unless it sells. I may start with a new advert for the IB components. They were rather lost in the long list of equipment I was selling all in one go. I'm not sure anyone understood what the IB drivers were.

 UPDATE: I have posted on the Cult of The Infinitely Baffled to try and move the IB drivers and [quiet] EP2500 amp. 

 Anybody within easy reach can have the drivers and amp for peanuts on collection. Following the death of my wife I am clearing the house of as much stuff as I can. 

 The AEIB15 drivers in their original boxes weigh 12kg or 25lbs each. I only have four original driver boxes. So would obviously prefer collection if at all possible. Postage would be entirely at your own expense.  Assume 20kg per box for calculating postage.

 NOTE: These drivers are in Denmark, SW Fyn! International postage would be very expensive. With taxes to be paid outside the EU.

13.02.2022 Selling all my audio and IB subwoofer drivers!

After more than 60 years of intense interest I am selling all my audio gear: I am becoming increasingly deaf in my remaining ear and badly need the space.

Included are two sets of four x 15" Acoustic Elegance AEIB15 subwoofer drivers, my quiet fan modded, Behringer EP2500, my Behringer BFD and assorted other Behringer equipment. Active crossovers, mixers, etc.

You would probably have to be living in Denmark to take advantage of my sale. These IB drivers are very heavy and international postage costs would exceed their value. 

The earlier set of four AEIB15 drivers has an Fs of 32Hz and vinyl cones. While the paper coned drivers have an Fs of 13Hz. All are specially designed for Home Theater infinite baffles. Best in sets of four minimum to avoid over-excursion. Not very suitable for car-audio Infinite Baffles.

AEIB15 subwoofer drivers and Linn LP12 + Naim olive hifi system for sale.

The years have passed and I have grown old and now almost deaf. My IB subwoofer has hardly been exercised for quite some time. My 40-year-old, Linn Sondek LP12 and olive Naim audio system just gather dust. We watch Netflix and YouTube. Never try to listen to any music any more. Loads of vinyl, CDs and film DVDs may well end up in a charity shop. 

It feels like the end of a very long journey. Starting in the 1950s with my father's purchase of an Armstrong, valve receiver and a 10" Whiteley, cambric driver in a reflex, speaker building kit in chipboard. 

The following items are for sale here in Denmark: Vest Fyn.

Infinite baffle subwoofer drivers: I have four of the first series of Audio Elegance AEIB15 with vinyl cones and an Fs of 32Hz. These 15" driver were mounted in a wall manifold but are presently, cardboard boxed individually. These are specialist, home theater IB drivers. NOT intended for car audio.

I have four more, second series, AEIB15 with an ultra-low Fs of about 13Hz and reinforced, paper cones. These are still mounted in a single manifold but can easily be dismounted. They are driven by a Behringer EP2500 power amp via a Behringer BFD. The BFD unit sets filters to flatten the frequency response to fix room modes. The EP2500 has a quiet fan fitted. Making it domestically acceptable. These drivers are well respected in IB building circles.

If you live in Denmark, make me a reasonable offer for either set of drivers. Or all of them. The manifold is doubled 18mm ply painted matt black and very heavy! This box is free to the buyer of the drivers if you want to save time and money making your own. Those outside Denmark should consider the very high cost of sending such heavy and potentially fragile equipment via insured parcel. Which is why I don't use eBay[UK]. Postage could easily exceed the perceived value!

If anyone is interested in a classical, olive, Naim pre-power amps then my NAC72 + Hi-Cap + NAP180 system may interest you. The NAC72 has an MC cartridge card fitted. Make me a reasonable offer and I will throw in a classical Marantz CD63SE CD player. Once much admired for its sound quality.

The Naim equipment has NOT been modified, "re-capped" or upgraded. The NAP180 offers 90wpc and was bought new 25 years ago from Radford Audio. The 72 pre-amp and HiCap were bought 2nd hand in England. Serial numbers are available to serious buyers. I would prefer to sell the system rather than individual units. Which would make them far more difficult to sell.

I have both NACA4 and NACA5 speaker cables and several, Naim connecting cables. Plus loads of other cables collected over the years. 

My Linn Sondek LP12 is about 40 years old. It has the early, Afrormosia plinth with horizontal grooves and smoked, dark Perspex, hinged lid. Valhalla PS. Black Ittok LVIII arm with a Denon DL304 MC cartridge fitted. 

Note: The Linn's outer platter is dull from old age and repeated cleaning. The arm, cartridge, main bearing and sub-chassis were upgraded and the Valhalla power supply fitted by Radford Hifi, in England about 25 years ago. 

I have a pair of Linn Kan compact speakers which are about 40 years old. These were frequently matched with Linn/Naim systems of the time. I made a matched pair of passive, stereo subwoofers for them using SEAS 10" drivers. These extended the response down to 20Hz. The subs are still sitting in the shed somewhere. You can have them if you buy the Kans.

A pair of Mission 753F 'Freedom" floor standing loudspeakers. Bought years ago from Expert here in Denmark. In black wood grain with bi-amp terminals. Cast iron bases with spiked feet for greater stability. The Freedom speakers had better drivers and silk, dome tweeters.

NO home demonstrations.[Covid] Sold as is. WYSIWYG. With natural wear and tear commensurate with age. NO refunds. Nor time wasters please. I am not greedy. Nor deluded as to the value of this older, well used equipment. Olive fascia, Naim equipment is still in demand for those who like the simplicity. How many Danes have heard of them and visit this blog is likely to be a vanishingly small number.

The new TV and problems solved.

Our old flat screen TV was a JVC "HD ready" 37". It lasted for 15 years until it eventually grew tired of being woken every morning. Probably just a simple component in the PS but retirement beckoned. 

I measured the space available and made cardboard mock-ups of potential candidates. It would be a 55" screen. Leaving just enough room on the AV "stage" for the floor standing Mission 753 Freedoms. These speakers must be nearly 30 years old by now, but have always pleased. A Mission 753C Freedom centre speaker sits in the simple steel shelf unit which supports the TV. These speakers were all bought secondhand having already been long discontinued.

OLEDs are the present best picture quality technology in most online reviews. The cost is high when newly released but drop as the different models reach the end of their sales year. A TV which lasts for years can have its purchase price divided by its lifetime. Inflation usually makes a mockery of the original purchase price. So why choose an inferior TV if you fully intend to keep it?

After extensive online research, our first choice was a 55" LG OLED TV. I collected it from a big shed, city chain store standing upright in its huge box in the car trailer. The picture quality was stunning but there was a pervasive stench of burning oil. The advice seemed to be that it was the fire protection coating on the circuit boards and it would stop smelling soon. It didn't, despite the technician who called saying it wasn't smelly in his opinion. So I returned the TV expecting to get a replacement. It just would not be an LG. Once bitten...

The Sony KD55-AF8 OLED was the next choice and I took advantage of the generous, end of model year discounts. This was duly taken home and dragged upstairs. The picture quality was even better than the LG and more importantly, much more natural. The LG picture had always looked as if it were "sharpened" with image handling software. Very unnatural it looked too on the cityscape screen saver. It would never look like that to the unaided human eye.

The experimental, manifold, 4x15" upper bass speaker was dismantled and the drivers put into storage to make more room on the AV stage. So it was back to the original AE 4x15" IB with more power from both channels of the EP2500. After weeks of TV watching we liked the picture but the SQ was demanding constant volume increases just to hear the dialogue. The Sony has a weird screen loudspeaker using rear actuators.

Netflix has never been very good on dialogue clarity from first hearing. The 4k Netflix subscription didn't help the sound. Much against my long suffering wife's strongest "advice" I brought the Linn Kans forwards from their former rear "surround" duties. They had been muted for years because they were irritating being so close to our sitting position whatever their relative sound level. The Kans were simply placed on top of the Mission floor standers and very silly they looked too!

There was an instant transformation in sound quality compared with the TV speakers. Or the big three Missions on AV system. Finally the dialogue could cut through the background garbage so beloved of modern film makers. Even YouTube videos now had stunning sound quality from the Sony's internal TV tuner. I listened to my favourite Voces8, Hauser, pipe organ and other classical music channels and was delighted. 

I had to make some changes to the speaker set up in my Onkyo TX-NR818 AVR menus. It took some fiddling to get it to send OSD onto the Sony TV. Then I eliminated the Mission Center and set the Kans as L&R full range despite their 120Hz lower limit. They then sounded so much better than using a 120Hz crossover. I have always used a Naim NAP180 to Bi-amp the front L&R rather than using the Onkyo. The Kans were happy to be driven by this old English amp. It too must be 30 years old by now. Where did all those years go?

Dialogue on the Netflix 4k series, which we watched last night, was much more intelligible. It did not require the volume be wound right up just to hear what was being said. I reduced the settings on the twin knobs of the big Behringer amp by a notch or two to better balance the bass. 

Age brings its problems. Not least with one's hearing. Particularly after a long lifetime of enjoying loud music, loud car and motorcycle engines and other "abnormal" abuse. The most obvious problem is "masking." Which means that background sounds easily swamp any dialogue. Daily exchanges with one's partner are apt to need almost constant repetition.

It matters not whether this is in real life or while watching or listening to TV/AV. It becomes almost impossible to hear well enough to maintain a normal conversation. With TV watching you get the deaf grandma/grandpa syndrome. The volume has to be raised constantly to cut through to the dialogue. One's ears have been filtered by age to a much narrower frequency response. The speakers must provide the inverse of that response to fill in the holes.

The Linn Kans are 40 year old, shoe-box sized speakers with a rather forward frequency response. Which nicely suited our immediate dialogue problems. I suppose the next step is to go for a commercial outlet, hearing test and start wearing hearing aids. The incredibly long waiting lists for hospital hearing consultants offers little chance of help from that direction.

French cattle suffering premature deaths near wind turbines.

Yet another weird story in the news. French cattle are reported to be dying early in the presence of wind turbines. The authorities first guess was electrical or magnetic fields causing the problems. Of course that turned up a blank.


They should then have looked at infrasonics. The very low frequencies [VLF] caused by the wind turbine blades. Not only by the wind on the blades themselves but when the blades pass the tower or mast. Wind shadow flutter. 

We all know the effect of waving a long stick quickly through the air and producing a deep muffled roar. Now imagine a turbine blade longer than a football pitch! The silent roar goes unnoticed except by larger animals. Elephants and whales are hyper sensitive to VLF. Why not cattle?

Infrasonics readily cause distressing and debilitating symptoms. Which are highly dependent on frequency and mass. Frequency is measured in Hz or cycles per second. The lungs, bowels and even the eyeballs can be readily made to vibrate by low frequency sound if it is powerful enough. Loudness is measured in decibels [dB[C.] Where 'C' is referring to lower frequencies. "Normal" noise is measured in dB[A.] Traffic, factories, trains, building work, etc.

The human chest, bowels and eyeballs are all susceptible to these very low frequency vibrations. So called "sympathetic resonance." Where vibrations are picked up from the air and then amplified by the mass of a particular organ.

Nausea is very commonplace and can be excited by large diesel engines in buses, lorries or trains. Fear or anxiety is another common symptom of specific low frequencies. I have suffered from these symptoms myself when testing my powerful VLF subwoofers over the decades.

Now imagine a larger animal with much heavier organs. They could well be hypersensitive to resonance at frequencies which pass completely unnoticed by mankind. Though it should be said that there are frequent complaints from people living near wind turbines and wind farms. Which lead one to suspect that these complaints are not taken seriously because of the massive, negative publicity it would cause if it were publicly accepted. Wind power would have to be moved offshore to avoid public resistance.

Breathing new life into the music.

It is ages since I scribbled anything on this blog. Then came the gentle failure of our 14 year old, 37" JVC HD-ready TV. This meant a replacement had to be found. Something hopefully future proof with a PQ worthy of investment. Over the years I have occasionally visited the big electronics sheds with walls of TVs and sneered at the often dreadful pictures. Or the stuttering lateral movements. We were never so troubled at home.

Only recently has OLED thrown itself across my tracks and demanded my attention. The trouble was the considerable expenditure could not be balanced against the continuing satisfaction with our current TV. Until, as already mentioned, the old one started to misbehave. 

Then came the annual, manufacturer's stock clearance. As this year's models were trundled forth. It was decided to invest in a middle sized, mid-priced LG OLED from last year at less than half the original price. If it lasts 14 years, like our last one, then we shall be in our mid eighties by then and probably long past caring. Who knows what visual entertainment technology will have been invented by then?

Anyway, to finally get to the point, it was decided to clear the stage where our TV sits just above the open stairwell. That meant the dismantling and removal of the 4x15" upper bass "augmenter." Leaving all bass duties to the original, in wall, 4x 15" IB subwoofer on the left. 

As a sound check I put "Tzar of Instruments" [Russian Organ Music] in the BDP and settled down. It was immediately obvious that the weight and quality of bass was back. I listened all the way through after tweaking levels. Very enjoyable it was too. I'd now like to get rid of the old BFD and have the Onkyo '818 AVR separate the subwoofer signal. With nothing more than rough levels under its control. Further fine, level adjustment can come from the 4000. Which is back to each channel driving a pair of 13Hz, AEIB15s in series.

I once visited a home with a tiny, heavily-furnished home where I could clearly hear a person playing the piano in the next room. I was completely mistaken about the piano. A pair of Quad ESL57s had been inserted somehow at random into an even tinier room, stuffed with furniture and sounded utterly convincing. The limited number of other electrostatics I have heard since then have not made convincing music. All draw attention to themselves in one way or another. Boom tizz-tizz. Boom tizz-tizz.

Claiming that only small subwoofer cones work is to ignore both physics and economics. They are horribly uneconomical to make their cone area larger by using a greater quantity. You can make no useful sound with a postcard until you stick lots of them on a large board. Only then can you move enough air to become convincing at lower frequencies. A postcard needs an excursion of several yards to produce low notes. Even if it were remotely possible the sound would be horrendous and it would take literally ages to move that far! We just don't have that much time for that much excursion every time we need to hear something h_a_a_a_p_p_p_e_n.... wooof.

A large set of 15" or 18" cones can reproduce convincing bass without any visible movement. So they need no time [AT ALL] to get nowhere fast. Dynamics and VLF to die for! Hit a large sheet of metal with a hammer and it shows no excursion either. Hit a shipping container with a even larger hammer and it shows no excursion. Yet both sound strangely LOUD and convincing all by themselves. Don't they? I wonder why? Ear defenders may be considered important for this thought experiment. Though closed back headphones will do at a pinch.

The problem with audio reproduction is the desperate [almost completely futile] attempt to match reality at all frequencies. And, to do so in a realistic manner where the dynamics are also reproduced accurately. Nobody suggests anyone sits and "enjoys" a steady 120dB. Pardon? But surely it is a useful momentary target if accurate [real to life] reproduction is the goal? I'd love to see your 10" subwoofer cone matching the little waif beating on the girl's marching band, bass drum! Now that would be something else and would probably require excessive intoxicants or narcotics to become remotely convincing. 

Back to the OP: Learn to adjust your subwoofer down in volume to match your speakers. Hopefully there will not be a huge frequency gap or overlap between them. Move the subwoofer around the room to minimize those nasty unnatural booms made by the room. Well away from the walls and corners [and you] is often best but not usually the loudest. LOUD is only for teenage parties because they have absolutely nothing useful to say to each other.

Learn to differentiate between miserably poor upper bass humps and better quality bass from a better subwoofer. Then just keep adding to the quantity and quality of your subwoofers until you grow old and opinionated. Like me. Keep turning them all down until you can no longer hear the subwoofers but only the [more realistic] music. At some point on your very long journey you will learn to grow very afraid of that little girl walloping that big bass drum. She was your terrifying first step and your final goal on your exhausting journey towards musical realism. Your constant reality check, if you like.

BTW: Some really big, ugly blokes can pound on the bass drum too. But you'll have to wait for completely new technology to get even close to that "alternative" reality. But above all: Remember that 10" woofers are only for 10" drums.

An ode to real bass:

When I first discovered subwoofers I could not believe my ears.
The authority they brought to all music was stunning.

Each improvement in subwoofer quality should be clearly heard as moving closer to reality.
Those who cling to bookshelf speakers without using a subwoofer obviously haven't listened to real music.
I am not talking about film bass here but the bass which supports music as a solid foundation.
Bass provides the scaffolding from which the higher notes are hung,
And delicately arranged and endlessly re-arranged.
Without the foundation and scaffolding it all collapses into a mere jangle-jingle.  

The subwoofer must be well integrated with the speakers and the room.
Ideally this requires something like REW to at least find a nice balance.
The ears are easily fooled and highly susceptible to suggestion.
How many of us have listened to a whole piece without realizing something wasn't even turned on?

As subwoofer quality and cone area increase so the cone excursion falls.
You can pump bass artificially hard.
Or you can waft it effortlessly into terrifying being.
I prefer the latter.
There is no substitute for sheer cone area moving a couple of thou' at 120dB!

There are no small elephants which can bellow over 7 miles from the herd. 
Nor small double basses. Nor 10" fog horns.
No bijou whale which can circle the entire globe with his gigantic acoustic power.
A contra-bass anything does not come in a shiny, veneered, shoe box.

A large drum or instrument sounding board produces infrasonics. [Sub 20Hz]
Which small subwoofers have never felt let alone tried to reproduce with authority.
You may never have heard the great organ pipes inter-playing at the very limits of human perception.
The composers obviously felt it necessary to achieve that precise effect by writing down all the pedal notes.
They could only have understood them from listening to real cathedral organs with 32' ranks.
You certainly won't hear anything like this very strange reality [at home] until you have acres of bass cone area.

Our world abounds in natural infrasonics.
They can be felt and heard in any large space:
Supermarket, concert hall, factory or train station.
Try standing in a corner of one of these great spaces.
If you can stand the crushing acoustic pressure!
Bass instruments have inspired man to march to war, or to dance wildly.
They have moved and terrified him with large drums and bigger horns for countless millennia!
We have a species memory for bass written into our genes.

When did you last stand in dumbstruck awe as a mere slip of girl beats the hell out of the bass drum as the band passes in step?
Did you not flinch at that raw power in your chest and stomach and paralyzed mind?
And you still think you can listen to realistic music through a 10" speaker?

4 x 15" OB part 2.

After some trial positioning of the spare half of the original IB manifold, behind the Right Main speaker, I took the electric jigsaw to the box again. This reduced it's size to the minimum of 42cm x 51cm x 85cm. Used in the 'tall' vertical format this will house the four 15" drivers safely with some meat still left around the driver holes. The OB baffle 'box' ended up as an open U-shape of still very heavy, laminated 36mm Baltic birch plywood throughout. Having no top allowed easy access for fitting the drivers and wiring them in series-parallel for 8 Ohms.

For testing I just placed a piece of ply on top of the box to close it off and pushed the open back against the sloping ceiling. This left two, large triangular vents to allow very free air flow at the rear. I re-fitted one length of the 10mm bracing studding with large load spreading washers to stop the U-channel from flexing to driver reaction loads. There was no need to seal the bottom as it rests on the carpeted floor of the stage.

Wiring the four x 15" OB to the EP2500 with the channel 2 control at 12 o'clock was completely underwhelming. I had to increase the setting on the Behringer's control knob considerably to make the output suitably audible above the IB. I will have to pull the cable off again to double check that I have all the drivers moving outwards with a 9V battery. I remembered to do it on the IB but completely forgot about checking the OB. [It proved to be correctly wired as expected.] On Netflix films there was a very subtle increase in bass impact. Muting the OB proved that the IB was still doing most of the heavy bass lifting.

Further increasing the EP2500 control to '2pm' and then '3pm' brought the OB bass up for an organ music trial. Suddenly I could hear very natural organ bass. I muted the IB repeatedly to better hear what the OB was contributing. This was more like it! The big pipes sounded suitably "breathy" and very deep. Still no BFD filters at all. This would require I fire up REW to get some idea of the raw frequency response. From long experience with them working in an IB I know the older AEIB15s don't do serious infrasonic bass. At least, not without heavy boost. That doesn't mean they can't easily reach 30Hz with plenty of "welly" to help the IB along and hopefully provide a bit more impact on drums and bass.

Playing a variety of  music I gradually brought down the levels of both OB and IB to avoid a rather detached, "heavy-footed" effect. While Netflix benefited from rather more bass for more impact. The OB box lid was given a seating of strips of foam to kill vibration and to provide a better seal. I shall provide a second layer to bring the lid up to 36mm as soon as I source some more Baltic plywood. It is important to trap one layer of 18mm plywood between the sides to reduce flexure in the manifold sides. REW testing proved a central shelf to be well worthwhile in a manifold even when a solid 36mm top and bottom were already in place.

The only way to get more impact is probably going to need a higher roll off point on the the OB. Since the Onkyo TX-NR818 cheats and connects both subwoofer sockets internally nothing can be done about a separate roll off point for only one sub. So it will require raising the roll off point on the Main speakers to push [both] subwoofers higher in frequency. With the faster roll-off of the newer drivers in the IB this will not affect it much. The question is whether I really want a higher cut off point on the 40Hz[-3dB] floor-standing, Mission 753F Main speakers. Having revisited the speaker setting menus on the Onkyo it seems there is very little individual adjustment available. LFE cut-off can only be set as high as 120Hz. This will have no effect on "ordinary" bass signals. Only on LFE.

Raising the "crossover" frequencies of the speakers just made the sound rather thin. So I reset the Mains and Centre to 80Hz with surrounds still at 120hz. Listening to Celtic Circle 2 I noticed a considerable increase in impact on the large drum on one track. It took me quite by surprise after probably 100s of hearings.

Overall I think this four x 15" [manifold] OB more worthwhile than any previous attempt to use the older, plastic coned drivers. I am still muddling over how the OB might be allowed to play much higher frequencies as well. I can't use the right Main signal because that is rolled of below 80hz. Subwoofer-out from the Onkyo Rx can't be independently adjusted and [I assume] will depend entirely on the crossover setting of the Main speakers.

Still having made no further adjustments I am noticing slightly greater impact from the OB on bass drums and bass effects. The effect is usually quite subtle.

4 x 15" OB Pt.1 [Late separation of the Siamese twins.]

After living with the 6'+ tall, eight x 15" AE driver, colossus for some years now I felt the need for a change. The two sets of four 15" mismatched drivers had been perfectly satisfactory for volume and accuracy but had always lacked some impact. Impact is not about just getting loud. It is about the rate of getting louder. Bang! Not b-o-o-oom. There was an effortless [potential] 130dB on demand but it just seemed to need time to get up to speed. I missed the commercial subwoofer "wallop" which I had heard at the annual AV show in the city.

Besides, it was long overdue to plank over the sloping ceilings of the IB enclosure. Which was once a gable end balcony but I had glazed over the open end to close it off from the prevailing winds and weather. It had become a handy storage area disguised by curtains over the antique French windows.

I removed all eight drivers using a rechargeable drill with hex bit in the chuck. Making sure I safely collected up the 64 furniture screws and T-nuts into a tray. You really don't want stray T-nuts getting inside the ventilation slots of the drivers. Then I laid the "coffin" on its side while I "sawed the lady in half" with an electric jigsaw. This went effortlessly apart from the physical exertion of lifting and turning the beast. With two matching halves to choose from I decided to use the top half for a four x 15" manifold. This saved me having to make a new, cosmetically acceptable top.

Previously the box had been so tall that it hit the sloping ceiling out in the IB chamber. While still being well below the 10" high, stage floor level in the listening room. I made some 4"x4" timber feet to lift  the box up to its new level and sealed the remaining hole left in the partition wall above the now-shrunken manifold.

I won't dwell here on the years of struggling to match the two very different sets of four drivers. The 13Hz newer drivers, with flared paper cones, drooped very rapidly with rising frequency. While the 32Hz conical plastic cones maintained a more level output until they were  rolled off electronically.

As seen in the image of raw responses at the listening position.  I have matched the curves for level at the lower frequency [room induced] peak. The newer drivers roll steadily downhill. While the older drivers hump at 28Hz before commencing a much gentler roll off with rising frequency.

So in the end the complimented each other nicely. Eventually I had made them matched and obtained satisfactory sound quality and quantity. But always with that niggling lack of gut-bashing impact. The bass drum and bass guitar didn't so much kick me with a jackboot as wallop me over the head with a big, soft pillow.

The matched responses, using quite a number of BFD filters, can be seen in this image. Even so the curves of each set of drivers rolls off quite differently at the top end.

The newer, 4 Ohm drivers were soon rewired in series parallel. Then I could start my first listening test with Tzar of Instruments. Which is an excellent, well recorded CD of  Russian organ music. I immediately noticed the lack of clear timbre to the great pipes. With all eight 15" drivers the tonal quality of each and every pipe is effortlessly laid bare. With only four drivers you really have to concentrate to hear the leading edges, tone and subtle detail. This has nothing whatever to do with volume and everything to do with very low distortion. Distortion masks the wonderful clarity and realism of the well recorded, pedal organ. All you get is loud, prolonged sine waves which [sort-of] stop and start at random. Without all the starting chuffs, unique tonal identity, variable sustain and realistic decay.

The output from the four, newer, AEIB15s was very obviously diminished compared with the previous eight drivers. Hardly surprising without the aid of the older drivers with their much flatter response. So I wound up the control on that channel of the Behringer EP2500. Then added a few dB on the calibration menu, test tones on the Onkyo TX-NR818 using the Galaxy 140 SPL meter set to C-weighting. There will be no REW bloopers at this stage. Meanwhile I reset the single channel of the DSP-1124 Feedback Destroyer to no filters.

The bass was now better balanced [for level] but softer and more rounded. With even less impact and the grunge now missing. "Grunge" just means the hard edge of LFE bass sounds and the effect it has on the timbre. The quality of the sound, if you like. The difference, if you will, between plucking a bass at the bridge or somewhere in the middle of the string. This all confirmed what I had noticed when I had first added the four older AE 15" drivers in one huge manifold. With the doubling of the number of drivers from the original four x 15" the IB had gone from nauseatingly powerful and impressive to effortlessly violent. All thanks to its eight huge cylinders of potential displacement brought to bear in moving lots of air.

It's all about cone acreage when you want really low distortion, dynamic bass. There is no substitute for cone area IME. Displacement achieved by single, long throw drivers is merely insurance against bottoming out. Using many more bigger drivers adds vital cone area. The cones then have to move only a millimetre, or two, to achieve deafening levels. Most of the time you see no cone movement at all. With "only" four 15" drivers cone movement becomes visible again. Every animal and object which makes loud and deep bass sounds is very large. So why try to reproduce those same  sounds with a single cone? A cat is not an elephant. A violin is not a double bass. A striped bass is not a whale.

I've tried making a number of OBs using the older, plastic-coned, AEIB15s. Usually with rather mixed results, though I haven't quite given up yet. Perhaps they just aren't suitable for the job with their 32Hz free air resonance but I intend to place the bottom half of the original 6' eight driver manifold over on the other side of the stage from the IB. I will use the manifold box inverted with the four older 15" drivers in an open-backed box. Opposing the drivers in the typical IB manifold form will kill any unwanted vibrations. 

An early image of my four x 15" IB with the older AEIB15 drivers. Virtually the same view when I look into the latest 4 x 15" open baffle from the wall-facing, open end. The minimum width of the box is set by the depth of the drivers when mounted externally. One pair could be reversed to reduce even-order distortion at the risk of exposing the undesirable 3rd harmonic.

There will be just enough room for the big box below the sloping attic ceiling right behind the right Main speaker. The four x 15" OB will be driven by the other channel of the EP2500. Though I shan't be boosting by +16dB at 20Hz using the DSP1124 as was so desperately necessary in the IB. That was the only way to get the older AEIB15 drivers to give any low bass, at all!

Upper bass augmentation and impact is all I ask from the new IB/OB set-up. That may require some tailoring with the BFD and roll-off point. And, if all of this messing about doesn't work, then I shall have to think of something else. I have had my eye on the possibility of using the entire stage as a large open baffle. With the drivers arranged in a row right at the back of the stage above a slot through to the room below. This will provide a 5' wide baffle x 10' long. The problem is being allowed to replace the old ceiling downstairs with new boards. A vitally necessary but very messy job given the age of our old home.

I might even hide the OB manifold inside my computer desk in its familiar dormer window. The underside of my glass and steel-framed desk is all fresh air. It could easily swallow the manifold provided I remove the desk's bottom shelf. That should bring new energy to my usually anaemic, computer speakers. I just hope all those big magnets don't affect my computer!

LG 55" curved OLED

I had my first proper look at an LG 55" OLED yesterday. It was on display in a vast electrical store and seemed to be the sharpest screen in that size. It was being a fed a repetitive diet of snowboarders strewn with coloured lights descending a mountain. This was intermingled with posh adverts for various electronics goods. I had time to kill while my wife shopped elsewhere so had a good quarter of an hour to watch and compare uninterrupted by staff or other shoppers.

Priced at 20,000DKK [about £2100 GBP] I found I was able to get quite close before the pixels became too obvious. Given a fairly fixed 8' viewing distance to the present TV screen from my usual chair it would have been fine. Previous advice for screen size would have made a 37" more than enough. The initial shock at the size of the 37" has changed to make it actually seems quite small.

The main reason I mention the OLED is that it represents a premium quality screen just as retail prices take a steep dive. A premium screen which is being sold by a football stadium sized mixed electrical goods dealer. A smaller dealer could no doubt be persuaded to connect the screen to a BDP and play a BD to the customer's own taste. This would, presumably, give a far better idea of the OLED screen's true PQ potential. On the repetitive video being shown at this big dealer I could see all sorts of local artifacts. Which I assume were the result of splitting off the same signal to a hundred other TV screens.

Even when showing programme material I could see a glossy reflection on the screen itself when I
deliberately moved off-axis. The curvature seemed to exaggerate the effect more than a flat surface might have done. My now-ancient 37" JVC flatscreen LCD screen isn't nearly so reflective as the OLED. But then the JVC has a plastic screen surface which can, no doubt, be textured to kill surface reflections. Albeit with potential, mechanical vulnerability issues.[The feared scratching has not occurred]

The LG OLED was remarkably thin at the edges and the picture extended well to the sides of the screen area. Though with a deeper, black, frame lines across top and bottom. Which soon went unnoticed. The screen body thickened nearer the centre of the back to house the vital electronics. This considerable thickening would be quite invisible unless one went deliberately around the back of the screen. A stand-alone box of display electronics might have been a better option for those who want a free standing monitor in a smart, minimalist room.

I did not like the large, wide and wavy, silver finished, metal stand but that is a matter of personal taste. I would much rather it had stood on an invisible structure to emphasize the 'cleanliness' of the screen design itself. I did not find the screen curvature a nuisance, nor of any particular benefit, when watching the TV from on centre. Only off-centre did it appear curved.

Having compared the screen to the two 55" HD LCDs on either side I would say that the OLED was easily the best screen choice of the moment if price is ignored. Though the comparison was with LCDs of only half the price of the OLED. Being relatively new technology, the OLEDs are still at premium prices compared to the more traditional LCD screens. That said, the extra cost is soon forgotten over the expected service life of enjoying the clearly superior OLED TV screen. Say about £2 a week extra spread over a conservative 5 years.

Were I in the market for a new TV screen I would prefer a flat [or much flatter] screen. No doubt it could be hung on a wall mount or floor stand to lose the showy table stand. Whether there are downsides to OLED ownership is hard to say so soon into mass manufacture. I just hope our humble  JVC continues to function so the replacement TV choice remains unnecessary. The danger is that OLED might be dropped as a technology. Or something even better might come along.

Sony BDP790P RIP. Long live LG BP730N?

The Sony BDP790B never came back from its holidays in the independent workshop. The unit was considered unrepairable. So I drove to the dealer to find out what would happen next. 

Somehow they managed to convince me that in the year since I purchased the Sony things had moved on quite rapidly in BDP technology. So their best LG BDP was now less than 2/3 the price of the Sony despite offering Ultra HD upscaling, 3D and lots of other options. A 4k 3D OLED screen is a very long way off at present prices but the technology and pricing are improving incredibly rapidly. Which would suggest that the manufacturers are desperate for a new technology to excite buyers into investing. On my aging JVC 37" HD-ready screen everything still look fine.

It still felt rather like I was being ripped off on the BDP exchange but there were no more expensive players available. Only recorders. I eventually left the shop with an LG BP730N and a free BluRay film for my trouble. My extended guarantee was further extended into ripe old age. The new toy does wireless[of course] with bells on. Lots of streaming services both free and pay for. Touch sensitive buttons light up the display. The LG is similarly slimline to the Sony but with much less dust and fingerprint attracting bling. Shiny piano black is a curse in normal domestic surroundings!

One oddity is the lack of a conventional disk drawer. A letter box slot is provided into which the disk is firmly drawn out of sight with gentle whirring. At first I worried about scratching disks on the edges of the slot but it seems not to happen. Disk playing is absolutely silent. Unlike the Sony drive which rattled like a cheap, plastic toy on steroids. So loudly, in fact, that it could be clearly heard above action films.

The LG BDP came with LG's own "Magic Motion" zapper/remote. As one who never [ever] reads the instructions first it took some time to understand what was actually happening. It lacks most of the buttons found on other zappers but provided a large arrow cursor on the TV screen. Yet again this took some getting used to until I finally read the instructions. Waving the device stabilizes and centres the arrow on the screen. Sensitivity to movement is adjustable. I set it to Slow to avoid the arrow flying all over the place!

Sound and picture quality are both fine so far on Blu-Ray, DVD and wireless. Start-up and disk loading are very fast indeed. Far better than the Sony and infinitely better than the lumbering LX70 Pioneer dinosaur!

We have run up against a shortage of fresh films to watch. So decided to try streaming Netflix.dk using the LG BP730N. Watching the 3rd season of The Walking Dead the picture seemed rather soft at first after having watched Seasons 1& 2 on disk. Surround sound was fine with good intelligibility on dialogue. Perhaps a little thinner and brighter than we are used to on disk but not unpleasantly so. We were soon absorbed in the story and quickly forgot about PQ and SQ as blood was splattered all over the place. There were no hiccups, picture freezes or drop outs. We have 50/50 Mbits/sec fiber broadband so streaming should not be a problem.

Netflix.dk has a very poor reputation in the online customer reviews in Denmark. The lack of new films and series is constantly criticized. The rest of the complaints are mostly due to customer accounting problems. Ironically, Netflix.dk has the highest charges anywhere for [by far] the poorest service by quantity and quality. Netflix.us has a vastly greater range of films and series. Hundreds of times more titles.

I certainly wouldn't recommend Netflix.dk if only the latest blockbusters hold any interest. I certainly couldn't see any recent blockbusters at all after a cursory scan of the films available. I wonder whether this has anything to do with supplying subtitles in a minority interest language? There are only 5.6 million potential Danes and not all speak Danish. We opted for the English language version with no subtitles. Some Netflix users use a virtual online ploy to enjoy the full US service for only a couple of pounds/dollars more per month.

Netflix.dk really hasn't thought the subtitling through properly. Sometimes [often?] there is no option to kill the subtitles at all. Which means compulsory foreign language choices in bright yellow in the middle or top of the screen. Absolute beginners at video editing on YouTube can do far better than this. One can go into the Netflix website to change the default appearance of the subtitles. Though the options are extremely limited. I chose the smallest text size in black. Why no transparent text or even smaller text options? Or just off?

Unfortunately most of the local Video hire services are going flat broke as fast as the Danes sign up for Netflix.dk and other streaming services. The cable package operators are also catching a cold to streaming. Overnight hire, DVD charges are almost as high as supermarket discount prices for recent films. So I really can't see the video hire services lasting much longer. Most have already shrunk to a wall display in existing outlets like petrol stations and tobacco kiosks. Several have closed their hire service already. Most hire outlets offer no BD disks at all and often don't even allow the original packaging to leave the shop. So one has to look up the details online! Surely another short cut to commercial suicide?

An update: We have been wallowing in quite a number of TV series on Netflix.dk. After literally decades of hardly ever watching TV [at all] it has been quite good fun enjoying drama without adverts.

It should be a basic human right not to be subject to unwanted advertising. Particularly that aimed at retarded adults with the intellect of dysfunctional infants. [i.e. The vast majority of it.] Working in advertising should be classed as criminal behaviour on the same level as serial murder, sex slave trafficking and pedophilia. Nobody with two brain cells to rub together should be subject to such torture! Cruel and unnecessary treatment doesn't even come close to describing its insidious white noise. A filthy sewer of turgid idiocy heavily laced with subliminal incitement to over-consumption of ephemeral shit.

According to statistics Netflix.dk has doubled its subscription membership from 200,00 to about 400,00 between 2013 and 2014. It is only expected to double again by 2020 to about 800,000. Having made such inroads into the Danish TV viewer's lives the figures are still tiny compared with larger countries. There are only about 6 million people living in Denmark. Surprisingly many Danes are legally tied to cable or satellite TV pack subscriptions associated with their accommodation. The ridiculously high monthly payments for these TV packs is a heavy burden on many families but they have no choice to opt out.

While Netflix.dk remains relatively inexpensive compared to the Danish TV packs it has very low daily relevance for most family viewers. There is no news or similar material. Those who can receive terrestrial Danish TV can supplement Netflix.dk but the latter remains mostly English language entertainment. With a heavy emphasis on US-sourced material. Netflix.dk has a very long way to go before it is a current affairs source for Scandinavian viewers. In actual fact, the relatively tiny number of [multiple] minority langue subscribers must limit Netflix' willingness to expand their local catalogue. The cost of subtitling in all four or five, individual Scandinavian languages must exceed the likely return on the investment. Which probably explains why the catalogue is still expanding so incredibly slowly despite the doubling in subscribers. The cost of dubbing every item in the catalogue would completely dwarf the meager costs of subtitling. Perhaps technology can circumvent the problem with live translation making steady inroads.

Experimental manifold extension mid bass hybrid IB.

A thought experiment which is likely to produce copious sawdust.
Read into that what you will:

What if a typical, closed end IB manifold was extended well beyond the norm? This suggestion often crops up with the fledgling, wannabe IB builder. He/she[?] has a suitable IB enclosure volume nearby but not in close enough proximity to the desired subwoofer position. Amongst these wannabes I must include myself here.

My present 8 x 15" driver IB manifold sits in a corner a couple of feet to the left of the left Main speaker. I would much rather the manifold was somewhere between the speakers. Being so far off axis it badly affects the frequency response by cancellation with the far [R] Main speaker. Leaving a severe frequency trough between the IB output and that of the Main speakers. This trough coincides with the maximum energy area of the upper bass spectrum. Precisely where one normally feels a nice thump in the chest from loud rock music, drums and bass guitars.

The present 6' tall manifold IB can easily lay waste over a large area but lacks this desirable wallop. It is insanely powerful and clean in the infrasonic and lower bass. It just lacks that something on rock music. This area is usually covered by powerful speakers. My Mission 753F floor standing speakers have been measured repeatedly at 110dB(C) but just can't do chest thumping bass.

The sort of bass you hear regularly at Hifi and AV shows. The Wilson Watt Puppy and M&K pro speakers excelled at this sort of thing. As can many others of course. I am not in the market for better speakers. I like what they do. Many speakers strike me as too hard and too bright. Certainly impressive, but difficult to live with in the longer term. I hardly need to mention the high cost of such transducers. Their size alone makes them difficult to house in my attic AV space.

Which brings me nicely back to the real world. Extending the manifold before it joins the large IB enclosure volume would be such an easy option for many of us. Yet the received wisdom is that manifolds be kept as short as possible. The exact opposite of my plans.

The basic idea is shown alongside. Only three drivers are shown instead of the intended four. My skills at drawing matching circles to scale with only a mouse are rather limited.

Such a strange layout as this would not be dissimilar to a huge reflex enclosure but with the driver[s] effectively closing the rather large and ridiculously long port. One could even build a large tunnel straight out from the speaker wall. Then arrange the drivers on the closing baffle. Or placed either side in an opposed driver manifold. Perhaps to bring them into much closer proximity to the main speakers to avoid phase issues.

Since multiple drivers would/should normally be applied to any IB the foolishly long "port" of this hybrid IB suggests they [the drivers] could easily be staggered. Arranged along the length, in a linear array provides a number of advantages. The deliberate spread of the drivers might well confuse the sharp tuning of this port as a closed 8' organ pipe. [@64Hz] Any likely pipe resonances should be killed by the multiple driving points along its length. Each driver being fed the same signal simultaneously should help to break up any fundamental or early harmonic pipe resonances.

The main problem is likely to be the extremely complex pressure waves in the "pipe". Each driver will see a constantly changing level of back pressure depending on the phase and frequency of the wave fronts at any particular moment. The rear pressure wave output from the drivers should hopefully be lost in the adjoining and heavily damped enclosure through the pipe's open mouth.

Though there is likely to be a reflection of each pressure wave from the exit opening back up the pipe. The problem is the sheer complexity of these pressure waves. Would the pressure waves/pulses effectively turn each driver into an ABR? [Auxiliary Bass Radiator] Albeit ABRs which are under the active control of the drivers' power amplifier. Rather than imitating the floppy cones of passive ABRs.

In my own case I would have the option of simply halving an 8'x4' sheet to produce a long, horizontal baffle. Each half could be glued and screwed to the other half to effectively double the baffle for extra mass and stiffness. The upper edge of the vertical baffle would rest against the 45 degree sloping ceiling of my attic AV space.

A simple batten could be fixed along the floor to stop the baffle from sliding outwards and further improve its sealing against the floor. The top of the baffle would rest firmly against the ceiling thanks to the weight of the four 15" drivers. Possibly requiring no mechanical help or fixing.

A good seal is readily ensured using simple weather stripping foam, draught excluder. The cost of the whole project is as low as obtaining a cheap 8' x 4' x 3/4" sheet of suitable material. Or rather its metric equivalent. [2440 x 1220 x 18mm]

The drivers can be spaced along the baffle entirely at the builder's own whim. Allowing for plenty of batten, or even concrete, reinforcement between the drivers.

Such an arrangement would offer a very small cross sectional area to the 'pipe.' In narrow musical instruments such as an oboe or saxophone, a narrow pipe produces a strongly nasal tone. This is due to the spread of the many, quite dominant harmonics. [Though the reed also helps of course] The fundamental is not nearly as strong in a narrow pipe compared with a much larger area, organ, flue pipe.

Is all this a good or a bad thing as far as an IB is concerned? Probably all bad. I have been warned by those far more expert that it will not work. An ideal IB offers zero back pressure and no reflecting surfaces anywhere near the driver cones. I am deliberately going against this advice and building one to put myself beyond any further doubt in the matter.

How will it perform in practice? Well, it should have much lower back pressure than any box small enough to fit on my stage. So it won't need massive power to reach maximum cone displacement. I have never heard of a reflex enclosure or hybrid where the drivers are fixed in the port. If it were a pure reflex then it would be tuned incredibly low! Single figures of Hz is a very likely tune with 600 cu feet working against an 8' long port.

It certainly isn't a tapped horn because no tapering is involved. What about a bandpass box? It has vague similarities to the 4th order bandpass. Except that the drivers are not sitting in an internal baffle and the enclosure/port is overlong and a continuation of the same cross sectional area. So the likely frequency of the pass band is a complete unknown. It isn't a quarter wave anything because the drivers are staggered along the length.. Nor is it a labyrinth. My hope is merely that it will offer the drivers a smooth, low pressure, resonance free environment to do their thing within a fairly narrow, upper bass, pass band.

Fluffy insulation could be laid along the floor of the pipe below the drivers and fixed to the sloping ceiling above. This would help to reduce direct reflections from passing straight back out through the cones. If enough of fluffy stuff were used it might also soften any remaining pipe resonances. There is no problem in filling the entire tubular space if it helps to smooth things out.

The proof of the pudding is easily achieved by obtaining any suitable 8' x 4' sheet of plywood, chipboard or MDF to give the idea a try. If it performs as an upper bass augmenter then I shall be happy. I really don't care about an extreme bandwidth provided it adds some serious upper bass wallop.

The most obvious mechanical downside is the reaction forces of having four 15" drivers facing forwards on a simple baffle. This arrangement of drivers has become a horizontal line array. Albeit one housed in a seriously stiff and heavy part of the roof structure. Fixing the baffle to the rafters might prove necessary if the baffle vibrates badly in use. Fortunately appearance hardly matters in my case. The baffle will lie along the floor in the darkness, behind the concealing curtains of the overhanging ceiling area behind the LCD TV.

The existing BFD can be used to flatten the response electronically. Though I have no plans to boost the low bass as has been the norm with the older, 32Hz AEIB15s when housed in the manifold. This should help to reduce the reaction forces by rolling them off much earlier.

The open end of  the baffle/pipe will exit into the existing IB enclosure. A 600 cu ft storage area. The other end will be sealed from the AV room with a triangular plate of plywood or MDF. I shall begin with the substandard, vinyl coned, 32 Hz AEIB15s. I have no need that these drivers dig very deep since the infrasonic area is already taken care of by the later 13Hz AEIB15 drivers. Which are presently sitting in the lower half of the manifold. The box will be halved in height if the experimental layout works well.

My personal IB battle has always been the lack of a space above or below the speaker/TV platform. There isn't any useful IB enclosure space above. If there was it would chill the room through the very thin, speaker cones. I rebuilt the roof myself just to put 40cm /16" of rock wool up there. So I am not about to make large holes in it now!

And, if the experts are proved right, all I have lost is the cost of the materials. Plus the fun time wasted in cutting the holes and fitting the drivers. This daft idea has been nagging me for years now. Unless I try it I will never know how badly it performs. These older, vinyl coned, AEIB drivers are [probably] unsuitable for smaller boxes and were rather disappointing in open baffles. If this idea works better than expected I could always swap the drivers for the newer ones for more infrasonic bass. Though the infrasonic performance may be limited by the very design I intend to build.

How are the mighty fallen!

My Sony S-790 BDP is fast becoming just another piece of crap. Its drive shakes, rattles and vibrates. It's getting progressively worse! The racket can be clearly heard above quieter moments in films and music. I measured the background noise in my room at about 38dB(C) The Sony produced 57dB(C) while playing a perfectly normal music CD! The player will have to go back. Probably to linger over-long in a busy repair workshop before being returned with exactly the same drive and a claim of no unusual problems. My, presumably much cheaper, DVD drive in my PC is silent when spinning exactly the same disks.

The Sony player was made in Malaysia. Unless Sony has suddenly developed a foreign factory, as a sign of of its charitable kindness, these players are made there because wages are lower than at home. In other words: They pay slave wages by Japanese standards and the staff are treated contemptibly. Presumably that would explain Shimano having their (expensive) bicycle pedals made there as well. It may even be the same factory. With armed guards to stop the overworked staff from committing suicide by jumping off the factory roof.

Despite the savings in wages and avoiding the expense of proper working conditions, in much of Asia, there is nothing new for the gullible customer in paying over the odds for crap products. Not just in the Japanese home electronics industry either. I have a British Naim NAP180 power amp which has to have the mains plug inserted at the rear every time I want to use it. Switched mains sockets are considered bad karma in subjective audio circles. But not (apparently) the essential switch on all mains powered equipment. It's probably required by law. So the few  remaining (endlessly gullible) subjectivists can only repeat the old mantras and turn a deaf ear.

The Naim isolated push switch design is aimed at some sort of unspoken but completely impractical ideal of isolation. The switch actually floats on its connecting cables, within the case and is actuated by an offset, plastic plunger. Nice theory until the switch will no longer keep still as it dangles limply on its own leads. Then the front panel, push button, on-off switch moves uselessly in and out without having the desired effect.

I thought I had finally solved the problem with a rubber packing piece between the switch and the inner drawer of the metal case. However, my fix was short lived and it was back to shoving the plug up the arse of the amp every single time I want to use it. Naim usually insists on leaving their equipment constantly powered up to obtain the best audio performance. As a committed believer in Global Warming I cannot bring myself to use that get-out clause for totally crap switch design!

Another odd thing about the Naim amps is their highly resonant alloy cases. The outer sleeve is made of a single, tubular, rectangular, alloy extrusion. It rings like a bell! So much so that simply switching the amp on produces a loud metallic ring with exactly the same tone as the tubular case bell! I kid you not! Even plugging it in, rather than using the completely non-functional on-off switch, produces the same, loud, metallic kerrang!

Naim's claim to fame doesn't end there though. It uses large diameter, construction kit, control knobs. These knobs have a plastic face plate held only by friction within a rubber band fitted around the plastic rim. Of course, you've guessed it, eventually the rubber stretches and the amp now has no security for its knob's face-plates. Last time I looked there was quite a market in overpriced, Naim style control knobs on eBay. Since the control knob face plates hide the fixing screw, which holds the bløødy knob on, then gluing the face plate on with something like super-glue is a probably a very bad idea.

There was a time [in the last century] when Linn turntables had a mutually parasitic association with Naim amplification in Subjective Circles. Until, inevitably, Linn decided to branch out from its mechanical roots and build the electronics as well. Most of Linn's reputation was built on the infamous LP12 Sondek turntable. It was far more expensive than competitors, like Thorens, but laid claim to improved sound quality over "lesser" record playing devices. The subjectively orientated audio magazines bought into this line, hook and bias counterweight.

I myself had bought heavily into the new "Subjective Audio" movement and started with a Thorens TD150AB. Which I heavily modified with sound absorbing materials. My later purchase of a Linn Sondek with a Basik arm did not provide the immediate satisfaction I had long hoped for. Repeated set-ups by the shop staff did not excite. Even the factory staff could do no better when they had an upgrade session at the local HiFi shop. No doubt the set-up free-bee and new springs was in the hope of sales of foolishly expensive, upgraded arms and cartridges to match their magik touch. BTW: Linn liked to add a trademark 'k' to every product name to separate itself from normality. So your immediate reaction to my obvious misspelling is only half correct.

Linn Son-deks were supposed to be "set up" in a unique way which could be heavily charged for. And was a nice little earner for many Linn dealers. Lot of mystique and snake oil were essential for this task. There being no official set-up instructions provided from beyond Hadrian's Wall. Not even to those LP12 owners who lived well beyond a grasping dealer's reach.

Those dealers with true witch doctor powers over the Sondek were much admired and repeatedly visited for the "laying on of the hands." The Linn Sondek would then [allegedly] achieve levels of musical rapture which no other turntable could possibly manage. We must not be cynical here and suggest that a ride home in the car afterwards might just undo some of the expensive "magik."

After a few years of love-hate relationship with my Linn Sondek I had it "upgraded" with new drive electronics. Plus an inner platter and bearing set, much more expensive Linn arm and a very expensive moving coil cartridge. I also purchased the supposedly well respected 72/180 Naim pre-power amp combo at the same time. All from the same, highly regarded Linn/Naim dealer.

Imagine my surprise to find that when I got home that the outer platter now wobbled up and down at the rim by several millimetres! [1/8"+ in old money] That would be the Linn ultra-high precision, platter shaft engineering, would it? The cheapo Philips drive motor still ticked incredibly loudly. Just as it had done from brand new despite several replacement ball bearings and new springs. Nor would the arm board ever sit straight in the [deliberately] sagging top plate cut-out.

Perhaps I shouldn't dwell on the roughly carved slots of the Linn's Afrormosia plinth. It must have been a Friday afternoon at the factory when a vat broke at the local whiskey distillery and the contents could only be saved by lapping it up. It took me hours of rubbing at the slots with a folded piece of sandpaper to get rid of the ugly raggedness. Given Linn's claim to owning expensive CNC machinery I cannot imagine why they needed to have a registered blind person hand carve these slots with a safely blunted chisel. [In case they cut themselves, silly!] 

I can't say the rebuilt turntable sounded very much better for all the added expense. In case you are wondering: I ended up using cellotape to pack up one side of the inner platter so the outer rim rotated evenly by eye. The outer platter still rings like a bell and corrodes continuously to powdery white ugliness unless constantly repolished. That will be Linn's special, low resonance alloy. Fabled to be left outside for months to weather in the special, Scottish climate. I have often wondered if it made any audible difference if the platter storage rack faces north or south? No doubt there are those in the subjective audio movement who can quote chapter and verse on such matters. What-ever. 

Meanwhile, back at the Malaysian sweat shop: The Sony's [supposedly] touch sensitive top plate has taken umbrage with my earlier criticism. It now refuses to switch on, or off, with a stroke of the hand. Well, not with my hand, anyway. I have tried both and it seems to prefer the left even though I am right handed. When the player does work it grows increasingly sensitive about its [pristine] quality requirements in DVD disks. We borrow free DVD films from the library but are constantly plagued by stutters and total freeze-ups. The drive continues to rattle like a North Korean tank running on the gas purged, by force, from several million empty stomachs.

PS. The Sony BDPs790B has gone back to the shop [independent workshop] to be repaired. It had added freezing to its usual box of tricks. Requiring the power be switched off at the wall to reset it. I tried changing the disk but that didn't help. Even the film elapsed time clock on the little screen packed up. Leaving us with just a series of hyphens. The picture freezing and hiccuping was the last straw after a year of listening to the Sony disk drive rattling even above action films! The touch sensitive case "buttons" had also given up the ghost recently. Becoming erratic in their reaction to my increasingly desperate hand movements. Often ignoring me altogether when I wanted to switch it off.

I bought a £50[equiv] Philips BDP1200 as backup and to provide us with our our nightly film watching experience. At least while the Sony is being repaired. Hopefully it will only need to be repaired once. Though I have very little faith remaining in any of Sony's products. The cheap little Philips BDP offers an excellent picture and cuts nicely through the background crap to the dialogue on Deadwood.  [DTS Master Audio popped up by default.] The first time I have seen it come up on the Onkyo screen. This seemed to lift the background noise at times but the dialogue remained nicely clear throughout. Fans of Deadwood will know how "convoluted" some of the character's voices are.

We have been blaming the Onkyo '818 for the lack of dialogue clarity ever since its purchase. I have been constantly fiddling with the channel levels. Though this provided no relief. We both thought we were going deaf! It seems the overpriced, seriously substandard Sony BDPs790B was to blame all along! The Philips also plays disks silently. Unlike the racket which has always emanated from the pathetic Sony drawer! The Philips also has nice "slow motion" drawer action as it opens and closes which the Sony at three times the price cannot emulate with a following wind.

Perhaps Sony thought they'd throw in a free bass shaker in the drawer. To save the purchaser from having to buy a subwoofer as well? Heaven knows what the Japanese dinosaur thinks it's doing on sourcing and QC these days. Perhaps a few of their QC directors, if there are any, should offer to fall on their swords? I just hope Sony doesn't make swords as well. They'd probably snap in half before they could do any real harm!

Talking of subwoofers: Some fuckwit is driving along a nearby road with his system banging away before 6am! He/it has woken me/us several mornings in a row now. Perhaps they should bring back the death penalty? Perhaps not. How, on earth, would they check whether he was brain dead?

As if through a glass darkly.

Imagine, if you will, that you wish to measure the volume of a space for your infinite baffle enclosure to which there is no reasonable, physical access. It might be an underfloor crawl space for example. Access is poor without making a rather large hole in the floor. Even if you don't lose a cat, baby or child down there any sensible partner is going to reach for their coat. Or yours!

Meanwhile, you suffer from claustrophobia and don't own a long enough tape measure anyway. Without somebody holding the other end tightly you cannot be certain that the far end of the tape hasn't followed you. As you dragged yourself along on your belly, with a torch in your teeth,  letting out your tape until you finally hit something solid. Do you return by the same arduous route to check if the tape has moved?

I was inspired to examine a similar measurement problem by the discovery of an old, disused and rather neglected farmhouse. Which we had found for sale while on an outing in the car rather a long way from home. Arranged on only one floor and well over twenty yards/metres long the old house seemed to have as many windows as an early railway carriage. The many rooms ran in a parallel series along a central, dividing wall. So there was no clear view through the property from one side to the other. The old house simply oozed character but badly needed some skilled and expensive TLC.

For some reason I became fascinated by the problem of how any interested party would be able to measure the various rooms without gaining access to the indoors. Would my fantasy farmhouse purchase offer any rooms as obvious candidates for a Home Theatre or music room? Well, one can dream!

Once inside it would be quite easy to rough out a sketch and measure the dimensions of all or some of the many rooms. Locked outside, but with easy access to every exterior window, made it a far more interesting challenge. How could I have checked the room sizes?

The answer to the measurement  puzzle was, of course, a builder's laser range finder. These devices often have a number of preprogrammed tricks to aid us. Though a smidgen of simple geometry might also be needed. Pythagoras had obvious mulled over this same problem too and provided a simple and elegant solution. No doubt he used a long cane marked at intervals instead of a laser. Though you never know.

Let us assume that you have visual access to the interior of a room or other space. Such that you can see the entire width of the opposite wall if you only want to know the floor dimensions and area. If you want volumes or wall surface area then you will need a view of the opposite wall from floor to ceiling. Though some lasers can calculate dimensions indirectly from direct measurements.

Window glass need not be a hindrance to our measurements. Not even double/thermal glazing. Nor need you worry, too much, about the size of your viewing aperture or window. In fact the smaller the better if it helps to increase the accuracy of your laser measuring position. It also helps the accuracy of your results if you have a laser device which can have the reference measuring surface moved to its front edge. This is usually just a matter of pressing a particular button on most of these devices.


Start by taking a simple distance measurement to the opposite wall. Just make sure the spot has hit a normal bit of wall and not a window, jutting fireplace or a recess. Make sure you keep the laser square (perpendicular) to the opposite wall. We'll call this first measurement D for Depth and write it down.

Now we will mentally divide the width of the opposite wall into two lengths A and B. Their dividing point is where you measured D directly opposite your viewpoint. Your viewpoint does not even need to be in the middle of the room. Measure the distance to the far corners at the same height as your viewpoint and make a note of each measurement. These two measurements are your hypotenuses for two, right angled triangles. Hypotenuse just means the longest side of a triangle. You can call these measurements L1 and L2. Or any other name which help you avoid confusion.

If you square each measured hypotenuse in turn and then subtract the square of  D from each you will have two more figures to write down. Squaring just means multiplying a number by itself.

First half wall:
L1 x L1 - D x D = AxA.
Or L1^2 - D^2 =  A^2
(Both mean the same thing)

Second half wall:
L2 x L2 - D x D = B x B.
Or L2^2 - D^2 =  B^2.

Use a calculator, or multiply each number longhand, by itself, to obtain its square. Now you probably do need a calculator to take the square root of each resulting number A^2 and B^2 .

The square root of each will, in turn, give you the widths of the two halves of the opposite wall. A and B. Now just add these two numbers together and you have the full width of the opposite wall.

If you doubt your calculations then try using 3, 4, 5 triangle as your working example. By a very happy coincidence a triangle with sides of 3, 4 and 5 units forms a perfect right angle between the two shorter sides. The 3, 4 5 triangle is much used in building work in the absence of a precision builder's square or laser alignment tools. BTW:You can use any units you like as long as they all the same: 3, 4, 5 feet. 3, 4 , 5 yards or 3, 4 , 5 miles, leagues, meters, chains, nautical miles, light years, parsecs, AU or furlongs. Just don't mix your measurement units.

Back to our real world measurements:  If you multiply the full width by your first measurement D you will have the area of the floor. So you can order a new carpet, tiles, vinyl or lino without ever standing in that room.

You can use the same system for measuring the height of the inaccessible room assuming you can see the far wall from floor to ceiling. Some of the better laser range finders can do this calculation for you indirectly. Simply by taking distance readings from both the top and the bottom of the wall in a pre-selected mode.

Or just divide the height of the wall into two and use Pythagoras just as we did in the width calculation. Except that your two right-angled triangles will be stacked one above the other. With their adjacent sides level with your viewpoint.

You can now calculate the area of each end wall of the room. D x H.
Or the area of each long wall. A + B x H.
Or the volume of the room using the Width x Height x Depth.

An underfloor IB space (enclosure) can be just as easily measured using a laser range finder without physically entering the space. All you need is a clear enough view to point the laser and measure the full width and full depth of the space. Then measure the height and multiply the three numbers together to obtain the volume of the crawl space. Never assume that a crawl space is the entire visible floor area of a room or even your entire home. It is always best to measure it to see if it provides a suitable Total Vas multiplier of at least 5.

The same method can be applied if you forget the volume of the space behind your infinite baffle wall but can no longer access it yourself. Though a suitable hatch or door is useful for maintenance. Or adding sound absorbing, insulation material. Just don't use the access as an excuse for using the space for storage. Not unless you have plenty of room to start with.

No doors, floors, windows or tape measures were hurt in the creation of this post.
